How to Use an InnovativeLanguage.com Audio Course

STEP #1: Level Assessment

1. Assess Student's Level

Test your student's ability in listening, reading, writing and speaking – we can assist with level assessment.

InnovativeLanguage.com courses' strengths are their convenience and ease of use, and engaging, effective, advanced and intelligent tools to maximize learning for time invested. Our system provides self-study tools for learning grammar, vocabulary, phrases, and cultural insight and improving listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Our expertise focuses on listening and reading, so a conversation class complements our product well, just as our course complements a teacher/tutor's value well.

2. Recommend a Course

Select the 25-unit course with the appropriate level for your student. Our courses adhere to both USA ACTFL and European CEFR standards.

Select one of 9 levels (some languages don't have 9 complete levels yet) from:

  • Introduction to the (language)
  • Absolute Beginner
  • Beginner (lower and upper)
  • Intermediate (lower and upper)
  • Advanced

Again, we can assist in helping a teacher/tutor select a course.

STEP #2: Actual Conversation Classes

1. Select a Lesson from the Curriculum as the Focus of the Next Lesson (we recommend starting at lesson 1 for each new level)

Assign the student the lesson. The student should, at a minimum, listen to the audio lesson and read the lesson notes, and time permitting, complete the associated exercises on the website (recommended time 30-60 minutes).

Time can prove challenging to language learning students. Based on our experience of conducting conversation classes on a limited basis for several years, we created 3 learner profiles and how they study with our material.

Language Learner Profiles:

  1. Serious Student (2-3 hours' preparation for 30 minute session)
    1. completes audio lessons, lesson notes, supplemental material,
    2. studies multiple lessons and incorporates vocabulary and grammar structures from multiple lessons into the conversation with teacher/tutor without prompting,
    3. creates written dialogue and saves it to My Notes section of the lesson,
    4. conversation during conversation class remains in target language for 15 to 30 minutes with student using topic-related vocabulary, phrases and grammar,
    5. adds vocabulary, phrases and grammar not introduced in the lessons BUT related to the topic introduced in the lesson dialogue.
  2. Ambitious Student (1-2 hours' preparation for 30 minute session)
    1. completes audio lessons, lesson notes, supplemental material,
    2. studies all components of assigned lesson and incorporates vocabulary and grammar structures into the conversation with teacher/tutor without prompting,
    3. creates written dialogue and saves it to My Notes section of the lesson.
  3. Busy Student (15-60 minutes' preparation for 30 minute lesson)
    1. completes audio lessons,
    2. (if there is time) completes lesson notes,
    3. (if there is time) completes supplemental material on website,
    4. (if there is time) prepares questions for the teacher/tutor.

The majority of students tend to fit profile #3 – Busy Student.

And, there are of course students who don't prepare at all. In our opinion, this results in wasted time and money. But this is NOT uncommon. Students are more busy than they think they are.

At the very minimum, listening to an audio lesson outside of the conversation class greatly improves the conversation class. The student will learn the vocabulary, phrases, grammar point and cultural insight.

Again, the goal of our InnovativeLanguage.com course will be learning outside of the conversation class. The goal of the conversation class should be to increase speaking time and to reinforce and improve on what the student has learned outside of the classroom.
